These are our most recommended varieties for the vast majority of Upstate SC yards. However with proper watering, sod can be successfully installed most of the year in our climate — we'll advise you on the best timing during your free estimate.

How long does it take for new sod to establish?

Most sod varieties root within 2 to 3 weeks with proper watering. You'll know your sod has rooted when you can no longer lift the edges easily. We recommend waiting 3 to 4 weeks before the first mowing and following the watering schedule we provide at installation to ensure the best results.

Do I need to do anything to prepare my yard before sod installation?

Iron Lungs handles all the prep work as part of our installation process. This includes removing old grass and vegetation, addressing any grading or drainage issues, and preparing the soil surface. Proper preparation is the most important factor in successful sod establishment — and it's something we never skip.

Which grass type is best for shady yards in Greenville?

In most cases, Zoysia is actually our top recommendation even for shaded yards in Upstate SC. We've seen Zoysia perform significantly better than Fescue in yards with partial shade and even moderate tree coverage — it handles shade far better than most people expect. Fescue is only our recommendation when a yard gets absolutely no direct sunlight whatsoever.
